October, 1963 - At five, I was a secure, verbal child and I had "heard" messages - more like comments, really - my entire young life, so it was not new when I was "told" to gather nuts for the squirrels, as the winter was going to be hard. We lived in Richmond, Virginia, because my dad got transferred there. In the early '60s, frigid weather never occurred in Richmond. When I asked my mom for the red laundry tub and told my mom the message, I'm pretty sure she thought I was the one who was "nuts," but she gave it to me nonetheless.  

 

My best friend Keith and I spent hours collecting nuts, then dragged the full tub to the backyard and waited. Nothing. We moved further back, willing the squirrels to take advantage of our labor. Nothing. But, after dinner I could see the squirrels scurrying around the big red tub, probably thinking they had hit the mother lode. Within hours, all of the nuts were gone and buried, and my mother had her laundry tub back.  

 

Christmas Eve came with its magical air. In the morning, the ground was covered with snow (the first time in many years), a miracle! The second miracle? Santa had brought my sister and me sleds! As we sat at the breakfast table hurrying so we could go outside, I remember my mom smiling, watching a flurry of squirrels digging for "our" nuts they had buried a few months before.  She had believed me after all; and apparently, so had Santa.
